PTO Meeting Minutes for January 11, 2006

Submitted by Betty Coady

Attendees:  Mr. Serbick, Lisa Marie Vogt, Kathy Toman, Patty Peletis, Jenn Fuecshl, Mary Schramer and Betty Coady

The meeting began with a discussion for the PTO to organize babysitting for the upcoming Board of Education meeting, which will be held on January 26, 2006.  What are the legal guidelines?  Lisa Marie will check with Dr. Cody and Mrs. Palagi to find out more about babysitting and guidelines. Where should the babysitting be held?  Library, Preschool or Kindergarten rooms and if so need to check with the individual classroom teacher first to make sure it is alright with them for the babysitting to be held in the perspective classrooms.  Suggestions were made for high schoolers or 7th and 8th graders to do the babysitting.

Principal's report-given by Mr. Serbick
-Middle school incentive on January 27th
-Movie night license is it a one time deal?  Yes-stated Lisa Marie
-8th grade graduation pictures Jan. 19th
-West Chicago H.S. coming here to visit 8th graders
-West Chicago band will visit some time next week
-Tiger spirit day contest will be on Jan 27th and Mrs. Palagi would like to know who is in charge of this.
-Lisa Marie will meet with Mrs. Palagi to discuss the contest. (Contest involves anything with our school colors)
-Springfield trip?  Patty Peletis stated that it did not come thru as a philanthropy request for $150.00 as in years past.  The candy bar sales cover a great deal of the cost.
-Teacher gifts-can we find out who has not utilized this yet?
-For the 06/07 year Mrs. Palagi would like some suggestions on what should be put into the welcoming letter for the new families that come into our school.  Patty Peletis stated that it is important to include the cover letter that goes home with the calendar every year to go with the welcoming letter.  Suggestions around the table were "Meet and greet families" were current families could introduce themselves to the new incoming families and show them around. Other suggestions were:  new comer reception,  existing families to have a checklist in front of them and call the new families and give them information and make them feel comfortable.  New families may feel overwhelmed with all the information in the packets and it may be nice for these families to meet other families face to face.  Make sure information includes our lunch program.  There is a lot of information available online, but it is not very easy for people to access and is not user friendly which was stated amongst the group.
Parking on Park Street became a big discussion.  A lot of families do not follow the rules and need to be reiterated.  Mary Schramer stated that directions that go out with the Tiger print are incorrect.  Directions are wrong it states south on Park for pickup and should state north.
-Mr. Serbick asked is it possible to sponsor a computer safety program with the Winfield police?  Patty Peletis asked what is meant by sponsoring?  What would PTO involvement be?  PTO would put out the word and supply the refreshments.  This program was done in the past and should be done yearly.
Bake sale- Lisa Marie gave report.  Linda McNamara stated that had a hard time finding volunteers for the sale, but the overall sale made $464.00

Box Tops-Lisa Marie gave report. (Jennifer Thompson)Next contest is Jan. 23rd thru Feb. 2nd.  Last check received was for $469.00.  Anyone interested in taking over Box tops.  Jennifer will be stepping down and if so should work with Jennifer on this next contest to see how the contest runs and get experience.

Spring Fundraiser Debbie Paler not here.  Lisa Marie did not know which company we are going with yet. Either Yankee Candle or Gold Canyon Candle.

Cook's Night out- we will work with Jakes Pizza for Feb. 1st.  Need to check with Patty Palagi and make sure this date is ok.  Other possible vendors suggested were Gianorio's Jenn F will talk to owner and then have Patty Daly call and see if this is something we can do in the future.  Other possibilities suggested were Tony's Steamers.  Lisa Marie will check with Patty Daly to see what vendors she has spoken to.

Room Parent-  Kathy Toman.   Calling tree is done and distributed.  Patty Peletis is going to talk with Maureen Panzeca to see if there is an easier way to do the calling tree.  It is a big job and very time consuming.

Chili Fest- Since the Steel band has been cancelled we were trying to see if we could get a fundraiser together for the 2/11 slot, but that will not be enough time.  Previous Chili fest consisted of 10 families made 5 gallons of chili and people had paid for samples and they were judge on their recipes.  Suggestions for the big fundraiser were spaghetti/chili fest/soup night and have various corporations donate desert, salads, etc.
Suggestion was made for the Fundraiser to be done on Friday March 17th St. Patrick's Day.  Patty Peletis will check with Maureen to see if the Girl's Basketball Tournament will be over on the 16th and Mr. Serbick will check with Mrs. Palagi if the 17th is ok.  If not we can do on the 18th.
If Fundraiser is done on the 17th of March we could have corned beef, cabbage and potatoes, hot dogs and spaghetti salads.
We could have a band and have contests:  hula-hoop and limbo
Lisa Marie is going to check with Babette and Christopher Dean and see if Christopher Dean (that has a band)would like to donate their talents and turn this into a dance also.
-Patty Peletis is going to check with Cubs, West Chicago Jewel and see if they are willing to donate gift certificates so we can buy our supplies for this fundraiser.
-Kathy Toman will talk to Patty Doell who works for a park district who may have access to getting decorations reasonably.  Lisa Marie stated lets keep decorations simple (green/white balloons and green table cloths).
We will have a meeting on Thursday Jan. 19th to discuss all the details for our main annual event fundraiser in the central school library at 7:00pm.  Mary Schramer will email Lisa Marie with a list of names that were interested in being on a committee for fundraisers.

Movie night- Possibly on Feb 24th:  Suggestions were Shrek, Robots, Madagascar, Sky High and Toy Story.  We need to check into the laws on if we need a movie license.  We are going to hold off on 2-24 till we can research further per Lisa Marie.

Nine ways to donate to PTO without spending anything extra was compiled by Mary Schramer and will be going out in the next chalkboard flier.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:10pm
